How far do they go back on a background check, when looking at your Driving record?
I was told that they go back 3 years. I applied for a job at the Federal Prison as a correctional officer in NC.

- The federal government has a large amount of resources, and tends to use them when doing background investigations. I wouldn't put that 3 year mark in the bank if I were you.
- they "can" look all the way back to when you got your first permit. But I am sure they will pay more attention to your more recent driving history and ALL your other goodies. ie: debt problems psych problems drug/alcohol prooblems domestic violence abuse of any kind.
- They can look as far back as they wish. Insurance companies usually only consider the last 3 years when setting your premium. It also depends on how far the Federal Prison wants to look. So basically, you have to ask them. And if they told you 3 years, then its 3 years. Being that it's a Federal Prison, chances are they'll look back more like 7 to 10 years if you've got enough of a history.
- the norm is usually 7 years but since it is a job that involves security clearance then most likely the job will check all records, Most likely a driving record becomes of concern if you are applying for a driving job. Or if you convicted of a DUI/DWI/DWAI or any other offenses that involved drugs or alcohol as they might be signs of addictions. Or if driving offense was related to violence as they might view you as a violent person. Must check and see what is on your driving record and act accordingly. Good luck!
- For any federal or law enforcement job they go back 10 or 15 years back; under the new patriot act laws, they can go as far as they see fit. Traffic violations are not taking "very seriously" unless you did something dangerous like hurting someone or trying to outrun police and resiting arrest. Or being a repeated DUI offender. Don't be too scare, a one time traffic violation is not necessarily going to disqualify you. Now if you got 10 DUI then you are in trouble.
