If a company does a background check and doesnt take fingerprints what info will they get?
What does a federal background check involve for a job? Do they have to fingerprint you to do a background check that covers all states? I live in USA. If they dont fingerprint you what kind of info do they get. Out of state convictions? Do you have to fill out a form and sign for them to do a background check?

- if any sort of conviction inside of USA they will find it
- background checks usually verify employment or scholastic history. they also do credit checks, history/record of residences, taxes sometimes, driving record, arrest record, depends on the job. usually just your social and drivers license will suffice (along w/ your signature)
- They can find out just about everything about you without fingerprints. Almost no one is ever fingerprinted unless they have been arrested or in the military anyway. They will be interested to find out if you have a criminal background, your credit, etc. They also want to make sure everything you put in your resume or job application is accurate and that you told the truth.
- It really depends on the company running the check. Do they want a complete history for a high security job, or do they just want to know your general history. The company can check for a criminal record in all states. They are ususally only interested in felony charges. A small shoplifting charge when you were very young MIGHT be overlooked. Many misdemeanor charges will cause problems in some companies. DUI, Theft, Battery, Criminal Trespass are not good. They are misdemeanor charges but they show you MAY have a drug, alcohol, theft or temper problem. Also many companies will not hire you if you have any drug charges. They will check with all branches of the military. You should have an honorable discharge. For high security jobs, they can talk to your family, friends and neighbors. You may not even know your neighbors, but they will ask them questions about your activities. They will contact your schools, to verify the information you list. If you didn't receive a degree, don't say you did. Also smaller companies don't alway spend the money for a complete background check. Ask the employer what sort of history they are looking for.
