Salary range for federal government jobs?
If you're hired by a federal government agency, do you generally start at the low end of the advertised salary range or can you negotiate your way toward the middle or high end? For example, if I'm currently making $55K at my current job and I want to apply for a federal job with a salary range of $50K to $70K, is there any way I can start at $60K?

- That depends on your qualifications for the position. Your experience, education. Usually it is that you are hired in at the grade that is the lowest grade and work up, but if your qualifications warrant a higher grade it might be worked out be hired at a high grade. But you would not be able to request a Salary of 60k.
- It depends on your qualifications and the area of government you're getting into. I was in the Department of Defense which wasn't in demand and getting the salary I did was something I was amazed with. Once I got out, I was making $5k more without question. Positions like USPTO are in high demand, so ask what you want. I got out because of politics and how things were in government. I'd ask about people in the system before jumping in. Gov't work sounds awesome at first, but the idiotic rules will perplex you beyond your imagination. I can't get into the countless problems I had with government which pissed me off every day. For example, they purposely designed parking capacity for 65% of the people working there. 35% are SOL in terms of coming late for parking. Funny thing, the ladies who gave parking passes demanded you kiss their *ss or nothing. I saw a two-star general get turned down - and he could do nothing but fill out the paperwork once again.
