Applying for Federal Jobs, ?? on references?

I am currently applying for a Federal Gov't position. When you do the resume builder online it asked for supervisor contact names and numbers. And if it is ok to contact. Does anyone know when they would contact your references. I am still employed and I wouldn't want my current boss called until after I am at least interview or considered for the position. Anyone out there know the process for Government jobs? AND if you say NO they can't contact your current supervisor, does that look bad on your resume? or do they understand? HELP :)

  1. Just check no. They are not allowed to hold that against you. But you do want some referrences that they can contact, like past employers.
  2. No references will be contacted unless you are at the top of the qualification list. You would find out you're ranking before an actual interview offer, which gives you a better idea of when references will be checked. So basically, contacts wouldn't be called before you accepted an interview. Remember, human resources have to wade through tons of applications, and they are only going to go the extra step for people they are serious about. Oh, and if you check "NO" and you get called up for an interview, think of a good and positive reason for it because it may become an interview question.
