I have a question in regards to a job I may be offered, and I need some help.?
I'm in the Nat'l Guard and I just found out today that I will be leaving for training for 5 1/2 months beginning March 23rd. Well, about a month ago I applied for a job with the Veteran's Administration and went to an interview about a week ago. Everything seems fine with that, and they are currently checking my references and background. I'm assuming that I will be offered the job, and I'll find out in about 2 weeks. If I do get the job, I won't be able to start for about another week (you can only start federal jobs at the beginning of the pay period). So, as this whole thing drags out, I would be looking at starting maybe the end of Feb, beginning of March. This is really close to my training date of March 23rd. My ? is this: Should I let them know that I have training coming up and basically kill my chances for employment, or do I follow through and take advantage of the situation and get hired on, then tell them, when they are legally obligated to let me leave.

- the VA will not let anything interfere with your training.. you may however have to start at a laterdate.. they support military training... I know this personallyyou wiill not kill your chances for employment,, actually it will help your chances. they support all troops
- I would not tell them until you are hired on. Better to keep it a secret then blow your chance at this job.
- It seems to me you already have a job for the next 5 1/2 months. Tell them about your situation. Under federal law, they cannot discriminate against you. They probably would hold the position for you. If you were hired with the mistaken understanding that you were available to start, it would probably lead to a poor working relationship when you got back.
- Well. I'm happy Mrs. Frazier doesn't work for me I see a character issue in her answer. The wisest thing would be to come forward and tell the VA what's up! They will certainly understand and may sign you up anyway. On the other hand, they will appreciater your honesty and perhaps, hold the door open for your return. Good luck!
- First of all, you need to get the offer letter that confirms your employment. If this occurs, you simply notify the VA of your military obligation and they can post-pone your start date. Bottom line, once the employment offer is extended your in. ESPECIALLY for military commitments. If you stll have doubts, consult an attorney or your command Judge Advocate Office.
