criminal record and federal employment?

I would like to know if you have a misdemeanor conviction can you still get hired for a governmennt job?. If so is there a certain "time spent" since the conviction before you can apply to the job? Does somone know what web site I can go to find out more info?

  1. I think it varies on the type of job. happy job hunting
  2. I actually recently read a question very similar to yours answered by an attorney and government employee. They responded the person had to have a clean record for any and all government employees. I am sure if you type in the Search for Questions engine any question similar to yours it will come up. This was very recent that I read it.
  3. A misdemeanor will not stop you from getting hired for a Government job - in most instances. However, since all agencies have their own rules, it is best to check the website of the agency you are applying for employment with. For example the Federal Department of Agriculture, etc.
  4. Obviously depends on the misdemeanor. If it has something to do with the interests of the government or some kind of..perverted thing then you will probably never get hired. Most of the others except for possession of certain contraband should not be a problem and the cutoff is about 10 years.
  5. If you haven't committed a misdemeanor in the last 7 years, you can get a job in any federal department. If you have ever been a convicted felon, you can never work with the federal government.
  6. Wel working as a Humans Resources person, I think that it would mostly be up to your employer. I you really think that this is going to be a problem for you you can request that the court expunge the charges providing that you are not on probation and have not recently had on other charges brought against you. Talk with an attorney. An expumgement can remove the charges permanently from your record. A judge will have to decide the request and erase the charges from your record.
  7. It depends on the misdemeanor, how long it's been AND the job. Schools are considered to be a government job (state not federal) and I know a person with a felony that works at one. Don't worry about it. Apply for the job no matter what anyone on here tells you. If they ask you about it, be honest. The worst that can happen is they don't hire you for THIS job. Good luck!!
