Important question!! employment laws!!!!?

Hi everyone!! i have an important question!, can my employer fired me without notice after being working for them for more than 6 months! isn't there a federal law that prohibits this? they made me sign a document when they hired me (at will employment), that means that they can fired me whenever they want and for whatever reason without notice! and i've heard that it is ilegal to do so!!, i need some advice!! i would love to know where to read about it and what to do if something happens!!! thank you so much i really appreciate your answers!!!

  1. They can fire you any time with or without cause. There is no federal law that has anything to do with length of employment. The only federal laws concern discrimination against a protected class. Texas, is an at will state and they can do this with or without cause regardless of if you agree to it.
  2. In the State of Iowa it is perfectly legal to fire an employee without giving a reason. Now if the employee came back and tried to get unemployment the Manager would need to give a valid reason for terminating the individual. If there is no valid reason the employee can be granted unemployment.
  3. Yes they can fire you at any time. You usually don't get a notice and are asked to leave as soon as they fire you.
  5. unfortunately there is nothing that you can do when you are working for an at will company. It sucks because if you quit they expect a 2 weeks notice but they don't have to notifiy you. I have been fired for no reason either and there is nothing that you can do. sorry
  6. All states uphold employment at will to a degree, meaning you or the employer can terminate the employment relationship at anytime with or without cause and with or without prior notice. An employee's only protection against this is if they can prove they were wrongfully terminated (i.e. something related to the their race, gender, nationality, etc., for exercising their rights, or if they refused to do something unlawful). The only unique exception to the states is if you happen to be in Montana, which only upholds employment at will during the probationary period. The document you signed was more than likely a simple acknowledgment that you understand the at will employment concept.
  7. You can find out why they let you go by getting a copy of your employment files. You have a right to know under the "Right to Know Act" Then you can see what is in your employment record that made them let you go. If it is wrong, then you can contest or deny it.
  8. Where do you get the idea that just because you have been on the job for 6 months that a company cannot fire you? The "at-will" employment notice that they made you sign is NOT illegal...in fact the MAJORITY of states in the USA are "at-will" states and I would bet my last dollar you live in one...and all they were doing is putting you on notice that they don't have to give you a reason and they don't have to give you a notice. Whoever told you it was illegal, is off their rocker. Finally, don't say you were forced to sign something when you weren't.
