The old days of "democrat = tax and spend, republican = less government" are long gone. The democrats, under presidents like Clinton, fostered robust economies with little tax increases, moderate spending, and government budget surpluses. Supply-side rebublicans like bush (I and II) and reagan cut taxes for the rich, but all greatly increased government spending (without a way to pay for it, assuming their trickle-down theories would pan out) and wound up running huge federal deficits. To bush I's credit, at least he tried to raise taxes a bit to pay for his programs, but he was crucified by his own party for doing so. Until the republicans figure out that trickle-down doesn't work (it's been called nonsense by economists, both liberal and conservative, for 20 years), they're going to keep getting themselves in the same mess. Like any politician, they can't help spending your tax money -- but they refuse to set tax policies to pay for what they spend. So, we wind up deep in debt, with all of the debt borrowed from foreign countries (the bonds sold to finance bush's deficit are mostly owned by Saudi Arabia, China, Japan, and UAE). What a mess.
