Success at applying for state government jobs??
I will be graduating in December with a B.A. in Sociology and am beginning my job search in hopes to have an entry level job lined up upon or near graduation time. I am really interested in entry level state government jobs for my field. However I would like to know if it is harder to get hired for a state government job than at a traditional agency or organization? Does anyone have any experience with applying for and being hired for a state government job? If so, how long does the application process take, what criteria must the applicant meet...etc. I would love to hear from anyone! Thanks!

- It is better that you try for a job in private sector. You can switch over later to Government Job !!
- it's good to hear that u r looking for a state govt job. Nowadays it has become a rarity.. The info on job availabilities will be mentioned in Employment news. One can start preparing for them by practising reasoning, basic arthimetics and Keeping in touch with the recent happenings. The process isn't a long one though it does take 6-7 months to complete. Do not focus jus on one field look at the various other opportunities that are present and I'm sure u'll get wat u deserve.
- Requirements vary by state. I would check in your state to see what the requirements are for entry level positions in your area of interest. They may require that you take a civil service exam and be on a list of eligibles. If your test is being offered, take it ASAP. That way, by the time you graduate, you can be considered for the position. State government does tend to move slowly. BTW, sociology is a great area right now. People with sociology degrees can work in lots of areas, but there is a particular need for social workers (case workers). If you are interested in case work, you should get a license in social work (LSW). That will open doors for you anywhere. Good luck to you.
