- Alot depends on what level of government you want to work at. Typically its easiest, not to mention faster, to try getting jobs at the city level. County, state and federal positions usually involve alot more red tape, but if you live in an area with alot of government offices (like a state capitol, county seat, etc) they are worth looking in to. Don't forget local colleges, these are also government jobs, and are easier to get when you have less experience, and you don't always have to be a student there to get them. With retail experience you should look at people oriented jobs. Temporary, or non-permanent jobs are a good place to start. Temporary in government can last a long time! If you are entry level I would try facility maintenance or park work. Jobs like this involve contact with the public, so customer service skills are important. Some cities hire part time administrative personnel for weekends or special events, this is also considered customer service, though if you want to try administrative you should take a typing test so you can say how fast you can type. Keep on eye on HR sites for the agency you are interested in. Cities often hire staff for special events like parades, after-school programs, recreation programs, summer concerts, you name it. A temporary position is the easiest way in, and it can lead to better jobs. Just be patient. Getting hired at the government level is SLOW. Its not like working for a private company where you interview and can be hired the next day. Plan ahead, jobs for summer activities are typically available in Jan/Feb and filled long before summer actually arrives just as an example. Good luck!
- Try entry level clerical jobs like office assistant. You can get the books you need for the tests at the library. The pay is good (at least where I'm at) and it will allow you to move up in the organization once you get in.
