Government & postal worker jobs with start up fees?
In the classifieds of my local paper there were several ads talking about government jobs, postal workers wanted, etc. They said you can make $18 an hour and up with full benefits... but first you had to pay to get their materials sent to you ($60 to over $200). They said there was a full money back guarantee if you did not pass the qualifying tests and get offered a job. Is this legit? Is it even really for government jobs? Anyone who has done this or knows about it please respond... I think it's odd that the government would charge you money before you apply for a job with them... Are these ads for real or is it a big scam?

- Steer clear of this. The Government cannot "sell" info about its jobs. What you are looking at is a company selling you info as to how to get a job with the government or the Postal Service. In the early 1990s, I answered an ad in the paper to get a postal job. I went down to where it was being held and took a test that qualified me to take another test. I paid nothing for the first test. I qualified for the second test and paid $250 to learn how to take it. My dad thought it was a rip-off and beat me into backing out and getting my money back. I wish I had gone through with it; I'd have been a Postal employee for nearly 15 years by now and have that superb retirement package they have.
- This is a service that teaches you how to pass the tests. They are not affiliated with the government or postal service in any way and can not guarantee that you will even be offered a position.
- i don't think it's a scam, they are just recriuters. don't bother with them though. call the postal service directly and inquire. you are correct, you shouldn't have to pay for a G job
- my husband works for postal office, all he had to do was go to usps.gov and click on employment link--follow all the links, they tell you pick your state, pick the job you are interested in, etc....however even after filling out the online app, it can take weeks, to get notification in the mail of when you can go take the "civil service exam" and even after that it can take weeks again to get called in for interviews if you pass the exam. I will tell you, when my husband signed up it took 12 weeks for test notification and almost 6 mos before he got called in for an interview. You must pass test with a 77 or better or they will not call you up. We never had to pay for anything (except the pencil you bring to the test and the gas to get there)
- SCAM! My sister and brother both work for the U.S.P.S. and I used to work for the Veteran's Administration. The U.S. Government does not charge anyone to apply for ANY Federal position, employment materials, application fees, or for the privilege of using their USAJOBS website. While it may be true that these people are advertising these jobs, they are making it sound like they are practically and directly responsible for the hiring decision - they are not! The ads may be for real. What they are doing is contacting the USAJOBS board and other Federal Agencies directly looking for open vacancies and get the information for FREE - just like any U.S. citizen who makes the effort to so do! They, in turn, advertise the open positions. Then you answer the ad, they charge you. BTW. If a Federal agency DOES charge you for any employment-related expense - they will request this of you directly and not through a third party.
