- Mining is a historically important industry in developed countries, with lots of people employed in it, so governments try to avoid closing mines or cutting jobs there despite a number of problems: 1. Mining tends to be bad for environment 2. Mining is not safe for workers 3. Mining is becoming unprofitable as all "easy" deposits are used up, and developing countries have cheaper labor.
