Am I crazy for not liking Kentucky and wanting to leave?

I don't think I'm crazy at all. By the way, I saw a KY question on here from another Yahoo! user, and I'd figure I'd ask a question while it was fresh on my mind. The land is beautiful; I love Land Between the Lakes, Natural Bridge, and Cumberland Falls, to name a few. However, the people are rude and impolite. I work two jobs--one in government and one in retail--and the best people I deal with are from outside Kentucky, places like Michigan, New Jersey, Texas, Tennessee, Mississippi, etc. Kentuckians are clipped, impolite, hateful, and don't say "please" and "thank you." I'm nice, friendly, polite, smiling, outgoing type, by the way. Anyway, I've been up north, out in the midwest and southwest, deep south, Florida, and up to NYC and NJ. While there are nice and mean people everywhere, Kentucky has some major snobs. Even just a few weeks ago, I was going to Memphis and made two stops. Fulton, KY was rude and hateful; JUST 40 miles south in Dyersburg, TN was warm and friendly.

  1. No you are not crazy. I also saw questions a while back and someone was talking about not liking Kentucky. I have been to Kentucky many times and I liked it. Don't see anything wrong with it. ☺ I'm from North Carolina. Maybe while I was there I missed the snobs.......lol

  8. no,your not crazy,matter of fact it is pretty normal to think that the grass is greener on the other side and want to see this for your self,most people often dream about leaving their small town behind.
  9. I like nice people,but not people who can't think right. This is in the wrong category,I don't even knoe there is a category for this!
  10. You're not crazy for wanting to leave Kentucky, I went there once and I found myself surrounded by barns and wild animals. I'll say this much, there is a big world out there and Kentucky isn't even the tip of the iceberg,
  11. there is plenty of the south for you to love...maybe you should try Georgia. People smile and say hi but I think most of the time behind that smile they are always saying something behind your back. But really I think overall the people in Georgia are polite. Even when your driving, people tend to try and wave hi as they pass by. It all depends where you go.

  15. I've visited Kentucky. I have a good friend who lives in Bowling Green and I've been to Louisville. As well as a couple other places in Kentucky. I didn't like it either. If the people were rude, I don't remember it. But, I just didn't like the areas. I'm from southern-middle Tennessee. I love Tennessee!!! There are rude people every where you go. It takes all kinds to make up our world. If we were all alike...it'd been boring :) But, most everyone around here is very polite and considerate. Why not cross the state line and become a Tennessean?? :)
  16. The land is beautiful I agree with you there. I have not had to deal with the people much though when I have gone through there. By the way thanks for the compliment :-) (I'm from Michigan)
  17. There are people like that everywhere,but if you enjoy please, thank you,and people being polite,usually SC,and the southern states are a great place to be. However,I think each state has areas where people are nicer. It's also how individuals are raised. My lil girls say please and thank you, and people compliment us all the time,because they say they don't hear it often. If you aren't happy there,by all means find a place you are.
  18. If you don't like the people, then I think you should leave. What's the point of living in a place of rudeness? I'm guessing that if I move there, I'd be hated because I'm Muslim. Honestly, I wouldn't wanna spend my life in a place like that, if you have the opportunity grab it. BTW, I'm from Michigan, people here are really nice (well most of them).

  20. I know what you are talking about. My ex wifes family is from Paintsville, Ky. Very rude. The only place that I discovered that was worse than anyplace I have been in Kentucky was Grand Rapids Michigan. I stopped at a 7elven and bought a map because I was lost and returned to my car in the parking lot. I was there for about 10 minutes and the clerk come outside and told us to leave or he would have to call the cops. I guess they think if you stay there too long that your getting ready to rob the place? People was unfriendly,unhelpful, & rude. I thought I was in New York.
  21. I just want to start off by saying that I'm from Kentucky and I'm sorry you had a bad time here but I think it is small minded of you to call everyone rude and impolite. I have lived in Kentucky most of my life (Georgia and Tennessee) and I find the people quite warm and friendly. However, I do live in a smaller town (4,363 is the round about number for our population) so I guess in the bigger cities there are more snobs, but you can find that in all big cities (NYC, Atlanta.....). But please don't judge the whole population of Kentucky.......and by the way, if you work in government and retail you are more likely to be rude to by people because a)if you are selling things and people don't want something they may get short with you and b)if you work for the gov doing audits or something I'd say people would get short with you there to.

  23. I'm glad you have become an expert on Kentuckians. Before one "Assumes" that people in Fulton, Ky are ,hateful, impolite,etc. let me share a short story with you. My mother was in church one sunday morning and she was experiencing admonial pain, so she was very uncomfortable, and her facial expressions was not what you would expected to see during the sermon. So the minister "assumed" that my mother was not liking his style of preaching and made a few remarks to single out my mother. Her Problem "GAS" not the preaching!!! Maybe the people in Kentucky you "Assumed" were hateful, wanted you to get out of their face so they could pass GAS!

  27. When I was a child I spent my summers in a small town in southern Ky. I remember long hot lazy days,my grandmother's chicken and dumplings served with her amazing cornbread on Haviland china with white linen tablecloth and napkins.My brother and I had the run of the town.My grandparents were well know and everyone-black and white- would have a greeting for us. It seemed like time had stood still in many ways.There was, for lack of a better term, an aura of gentility that we didn't see in my home town. I went back there just last summer and was struck by the changes.The town was dirty and many of the old stores were either boarded up or home to cheesy souvenir shops staffed by gum cracking girls who could have used a good scrubbing.We went to my beloved Cumberland Falls where we would often rent a couple of cabins with friends and again I was struck by how dirty everything was. The rocks you can walk on to look out over the falls were littered with pop cans and cigarette butts. Everywhere we went people were smoking without regard to anyone else then just tossing the butts anywhere.I didn't find most people to be rude but then there was the *itch behind the motel counter who suggested that maybe my 94 year old father could clean up the ceiling tile that fell down in his shower "cause all the cleaners are busy now" Oh for lost gentility .You really can't go home again.Sob(crying sob not son of a *itch sob)
  28. I was in Phelps,KY like 4-5 weeks ago and I'd have to agree they are rude to people passing by from other states especially when it comes to directions
  29. I live in southern illinois and all you have to do is go a couple of towns over to see a major difference in attitude. Carbondale is friendly. Marion is full of wannabe rich snobs. But central and northern illinois is much worse. But the southern states in general are much nicer than the rest.
