Will a police report that was filed show up in background checks for a US government job?
I would like to apply for a government job, but I've had a police report filed on me a few months ago because of a misunderstanding I've made, mistaking a laptop that was mine but ended up it was not and I tried to take it from a guy who was in my college class. I cleared it up with the guy but the scene was big that the police came and took down my name and information for a police report. I was not convicted or pressed charges since it was a misunderstanding. Please refer to an older question I asked before for more information about the case if you like. My main question is, Will the US government be able to see this police report from a background check? Thanks. No fingerprinting done or convictions or charges, but my information like name and social security was needed. Still cleared?

- You should be okay
- I woudn't worry about a police report.
- yes
- Probably not. They do an AGENCY CHECK and circulate your name and details to all the agencies, including the FBI. A local "police report" by itself is not a criminal incident. You will have to fill out a form for the background check and it will ask you about arrests. Not about the time a cop escorted you to the police station.
- Not unless you were prosecuted or it arrived on the court docket.
- Yes, thats the purpose of a background check....
- No conviction. No record. but........ you've asked this question 5 times........ the majority answers are "No".......so quit sweating it!! **************************************
- They only check for convictions. Remember, you are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
- No charges were filed. I wouldn't worry about it.
- it might show up but its not a big deal so i wouldent worry about it
- That is no problem at all it will never come up, so rest easy!
- Oh ok, if it is just a police report, then the government will not see it. Actually, let me put it this way, they don't care. Your name will be on the database for a short while. They put your name down because they need to make a report regarding about what happened at the incident and what action they took after they were dispatched by the station. Don't worry, it isn't a criminal record and the government won't check it.
- YES IT WILL! ABSOLUTELY AND I KNOW THIS BECAUSE...WHEN YOU GO TO COURT ON AN UNRELATED CHARGE , THEY BRING UP EVERYTHING YOU EVER DID OR WERE ACCUSED OF DURING YOUR LIFETIME....FOR A DOMESTIC DISPUTE , A J WALKING CHARGE , WHATEVER , IF THE COPS CAME AND TOOK A REPORT , EVEN IF CHARGES WERE NOT FILED , THEY STILL HAVE IT ALL ON RECORD , AND CAN AND WILL USE IT AGAINST YOU LATER ON ...AND IF THEY CAN GET IT , YOU KNOW THE GOVERNMENT WILL DEFINITELY HAVE ACCESS TO IT EVEN EASIER......P.S. THESE PEOPLE TELLING YOU "NO CONVICTION , NO RECORD" ..ARE DEAD WRONG !....I KNOW FROM EXPERIENCE...DONT YOU BELIEVE IT....GOOD LUCK !..TAKE CARE....GR1M
- if you were not arrested it will not show up on a background check. Only arrests are reported and convictions == YOu have nothing to worry about if there were no charges filed against you.You werent fingerprinted for this were you?? I assume you were not as there were no charges filed----good luck to you
- Possible! Of course, the US government will have access to such reports, if any, on a prospective employee of the government! Whether it will have a negative effect on one's chances of getting the job depends on various relevant factors!
- If the agency you are applying with does a records check with that police department then it will most likely come out. If it was a misunderstanding then it should not be any big issue. Your best bet is to be honest about it upfront when you apply. If they ask you if you have ever been arrested detained or questioned by the police, let them know about the incident. It should not play a huge factor if you are honest and there were never any charges involved. You could also ask for a copy of the police report and submit it with you application. Honesty upfront is ALWAYS best!!!
- I think it will show up since a Gov't official is pulling your name and record but since nothing came of it they wont feel the need to further investigate the dispute and just overlook it.
- I work in IT/Data and my best advice is to assume ANYTHING that is reported/filed in this day and age will never go away. I'm not being paranoid, just realistic. It is amazing how interconnected the electronic world is today. Despite all the perceived flaws in electronic analysis, find information about a specific person is much better than most people realize. If the report with your name does show up, I would be prepared to simply explain what happened. My guess would be that the scene leading up to the report would have a larger bearing on the job than the misunderstanding that led up to it.
- If they take the time to do a deep check they will see it, but if it was cleared up, & you were not charged, you will probably be alright.
- HERES EXACTLY WHAT TO SO YOU DONT HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT IT... REQUEST YOUR OWN CRIMINAL BACKGROUND REPORT THIS WILL BE EXACTLY WHAT THEY GET WHEN THEY ORDER IT.
