What does the GS stand for in a Federal Government job?

I have noticed that people are ranked GS 1-15. How do you move up the rankings once hired? thank you

  1. go to usajobs.com it explains it all...
  2. GS stands for "General Service". One advances by being promoted. One is promoted for doing more difficult work and accepting more responsibility. However, there is a move afoot to do away with the GS system. The major changes are no increases in pay based on seniority and a financial reward system (continuing and bonus pay) that is more tied to actual performance.
  3. Government Service. 13 & higher are managerial levels.
  4. Does it really matter
  5. It stands for General Schedule, and is a pay grade system used for many government employees.
