What does the GS stand for in a Federal Government job?
I have noticed that people are ranked GS 1-15. How do you move up the rankings once hired? thank you

- go to usajobs.com it explains it all...
- GS stands for "General Service". One advances by being promoted. One is promoted for doing more difficult work and accepting more responsibility. However, there is a move afoot to do away with the GS system. The major changes are no increases in pay based on seniority and a financial reward system (continuing and bonus pay) that is more tied to actual performance.
- Government Service. 13 & higher are managerial levels.
- Does it really matter
- It stands for General Schedule, and is a pay grade system used for many government employees.
