Fema Employment

I was let go from 2 jobs for performance issues - will this affect my security clearance?

I was recently offered a job with a federal agency. It is a level 5 position of public trust. The job has a background investigation to determine suitability for federal employment and I am supposed to fill a form SF-85p. I was let go from one job after only a few months (small crappy company) and another job last year during the economic downturn. They said I was let go due to performance but I firmly believe it is a disguised layoff. Will all this affect my background clearance? Will I be able to successfully continue in my job without issues? Any federal employees here with experience in this matter please answer.

  1. The problem is not you "clearance" ; your problem is your performance report. Those are two different things. Basically you have to pass two evaluations: 1) Security 2) Qualifications. Even if you get a "good clearance" you will probably get a questioned about your past performance as an employee. In the worst case scenario could be like they saying "hey we trust you, you are a patriot... but... your record says you are a bad employee." For that reasons is important to explain everything since the beginning; tell your side of the story before they find for themselves.
  2. Your competence was the issue, not trustworthiness.
