Are there any federal or state laws against student discrimination?

A friend of mine attends the same local community college as me. She has had several instructors discriminate against her based on her sexual orientation and appearance. She has now been forced to utilize the option of a self study program to avoid this disparate treatment. She does not wish to pursue any action against the school. I, however, seek to ensure that this treatment does not continue. Not only for her sake, but to ensure that all students are treated equally. I am aware that Title VII of the Civil Rights Act protects minority groups from employment discrimination. However, are there any laws that protect students from being discriminated against by teachers? If so: -What are they? -What agency enforces them? -Do the law(s) prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation? If not: -Do you know of any organizations or groups that are currently fighting this issue? I live in North Carolina but I am interested to see if any other states have laws regarding these issues.

  1. Try doing a search for local LGBT groups, but I'm sure there has to be something against it. I'd say to contact the ACLU, but I hate them. Good luck.
  2. The first thing I would do is look into the universities own student policies regarding discrimination and it's protections of minority students. This may keep you from even pursuing this legally, as most universities have policies in place. After that I suggest you contact Lambdalegal.org L
