Are there any experts on immigration to Canada who can answer my question?
I'm borrowing this account to ask a question. I would like to immigrate to Canada. I am a married 30 year old Italian citizen, with no criminal record. No children. I am in my last year of post graduate study. I would like to apply under the skilled worker program as a university professor. I have taught at the university level in Italy and the United States. I am fluent in english and proficient in french. My spouse is 27 with some higher education. I don't have family in Canada. I can support myself upon arrival. I have some financial assets. The only thing that I lack is confirmed employment but I do believe that I will be able to find an appointment to teach. My field of expertise is quite esoteric and I believe that my knowledge is needed in Canada. I've taken the self-assessment test on the Canadian government website I scored a 74 with a passing score of 67. As a knowledgeable person in this matter, what do you think? Is my chance to immigrate realistic? Thank you very much for the advice and encouragement, Jim B and egay. It is my greatest hope to be able to live and work in Canada, to build a life there and have my children be born as Canadian citizens. eh?

- I would suggest that you start by looking at the employment websites of the five biggest Universities in Canada, for faculty openings. If you can secure a job offer from a Canadian University, your immigration application will be smoother, for sure. My wife is a business manager at the University of Toronto, and her institute has used a immigration law firm in Toronto, to expedite applications from persons who they wanted to hire, from other countries. In descending order, here are five places to look for employment . The University of Toronto. Mc Gill University, in Montreal, which conducts all its programs in English. Queens University in Kingston, Ontario. The University of British Columbia. Mac Master University in Hamilton , Ontario. Each of those have a wide ranging, full service curriculum, and are well regarded world wide. Good luck in your quest. Jim b. Toronto.
- Go ahead and apply. You have very strong credentials and I think that Canada would be happy to have you and your family. Canada would take you right away. You have to remember that there is a strong competition right now for skilled labor around the world. It is not only the US and Canada offering enticing packages to live in their countries. New Zealand and Australia even the UK have entered the picture and are trying to court professionals the best in their fields to immigrate to their countries. So once you apply then I think all will be well. Canada will gladly have you. Your teaching credentials in the US and Italy should help you a lot and of course higher education will earn you extra points. Your age will also earn you extra points. Since you do not have family members in Canada to help sponsor you and you have enough resources to provide for you while you look for a job, I still suggest looking into accredited agencies that look for jobs for people who wish to immigrate to Canada or help you scout around for jobs. In fact a company/university can sponsor you so you will not be needing a family sponsor. Since you are proficient in French you might want to try the Montreal side of Canada. Good luck and I hope you get to move to Canada soon.
