Any California mom-and-pop shops have an opinion about this?

- I wouldn't expect much response. Most of the smaller businesses in California have already buckled under the weight of years and years of liberal regulation. Your real estate article's author used the term Draconian instead of liberal, but they really are synonymous with regards to California government. I celebrated my business's 30 year anniversary on April 1 this year. Woohoo! 30 years! How did I celebrate? I let my landlord know that I would be closing my shop, and moving my business to my house. In my 30 years, I've never had to run my business out of my house and really wish I didn't have to now. I haven't figured out how to squeeze 4000 square feet into a two car garage yet. The worst part is, I'm only able to keep four employees, and they've been reduced to part time. Happy 30th Anniversary! Sure, the economy is bad all over, but my state's answer is to throw fuel on the fire. California's Energy Commission has decided (by seemingly picking a number out of their butts) that televisions must be 33% more efficient by 2011 or they can't be sold here. I wrote them a nice letter about the likelyhood that large TVs won't be able to be sold here any longer except for ones with lackluster pictures, and they responded with "Refrigerators did it. You guys will figure it out." That was the breaking point for Pioneer. Even though they make the best and one of the more expensive plasma displays, they've decided to pull the plug on their TV business. You see, they can't make their TVs 33% more efficient by 2011, and without California sales they can't survive during these economic times. Our government bureaucrats and functionaries have placed the proverbial final straw on the back of Pioneer's camel. They will continue to build TVs until early 2010, then they will close their TV factory. How does that effect me and my family? You guessed it. I sell their products. But it's not just Pioneer. Every important manufacturer of televisions is dropping their larger TVs from the California market next year. Why? They can't meet the 33% efficiency requirement without diminishing performance. Why not? Because due to federal Energy Star tax benefits, they are already building efficient TVs. (Think of it this way. If the federal government offered everyone a $2000/year tax credit for cutting their household electricity usage by 50%, then California comes along a year later and demands we MUST cut by another 33% or we can't live here.) By this time next year, I'm going to be building first class media rooms, and slapping some sloppy crappola TV in the middle of them. Goodbye Pioneer Elite, goodbye big Sonys, big Sharps, big Mitsubishis... Hello Visio. LOL More generally speaking, businesses are groaning under the weight of the new "green" plan which forces them to cut carbon emmisions way ahead of the federal government plan. That will certainly cause the 3rd business exodus from California in my adult lifetime. The first was during President Carter and Governor Jerry Brown. The second was during President Bill Clinton and Governer Grey Davis and the third will be under President Obama and our Governator who while not so conservative himself, is choked by a liberal legislature. This time they won't be going to Atlanta, Phoenix or Las Vegas. This time they will go to China, India and Mexico. These morons in Sacramento don't think it through. "Obama says the green industry is going to create jobs so lets jump way out ahead of the pack and get those jobs... Save the planet, save the planet!" Hey geniuses. Knock knock. Anybody home? Howsa bout all those jobs we lost in the process? Ever think of that? Hello... The author of your article discribes California's government as "notoriously inept" but that's not strong enough to describe a group of people that would systematically kill their own state. How about dip$hits? As in "They are ALL dip$hits." Sure. Yeah. We've got to save the planet. But at the cost of California? My 3rd child is one year from college, currently in the International Baccalaureate Program with a 4.3 GPA and her younger brother is only two years behind her. My daughter is interested in theater and law. She decided during her sophomore year that she wanted to attend NYU, or better yet (if dad could afford it) Sarah Lawrence. That plan is out the window. Now we're looking at state-run universities here in California, but our state government is raising prices A LOT, even for residents. It seems the prime directive is to keep the gluttonous overweight government afloat at any and all costs. Sure, I could pay the rent at the shop for another year until my daughter is ready for college, but what's the point. The California government is not doing the things necessary for business to get better. Frankly, with the major hit the college fund took I'm going to be subsidizing college with income for my daughter and her younger brother too--money I should be using to bolster the decimated retirement fund since I'll be at least 62 when my youngest graduates. The savings from eliminating personel and office/shop expenses is going to be necessary for us to survive. Way to go California! Another business gutted, and another handful of people to feed off the social welfare teat. Oh, I know... Save the planet, save the planet. How about Kiss my butt, Kiss my butt! And if the lovely folks in Sacramento didn't already do enough for us, we now have to consider proposition 1a: The "rainy day" fund. Hey geniuses. Knock knock. Anybody home? How ever did you come up with the brilliant idea of raising our taxes for a rainy day fund IN THE MIDDLE OF A RAINY DAY? Earth to Sacramento... Earth to Sacramento... Can you hear us up there? It's like the lights are on, but nobody's home.
- Mom & POP were TAXED to death , I'll not benefit from this theft nor will they! I closed my business in 92 because the gravy was taken & the potatoes don't taste so great without profit ! The penalties for being self employed are a real deterrent to self reliance & productivity
- Where there is a will; there's a way I guess,. *sigh* =(
