Number of federal Jobs Created by the New Deal?
Does anybody know how many jobs were created by federal government programs under the New Deal? I'm writing a research paper about the New Deal for school, and i've been looking for the static everywhere but I can't find it. I'm looking for a legitimate number with a reliable source.

- http://www.colorado.edu/ibs/eb/alston/econ4524/Higgs-ch2.pdf has federal civilian employment as percentage overall employment. Difficult question. I'm sure historian and economists have calculated such values, but could not find any quickly on the net. One reason is that FDR created many brand new agencies starting in '32. Some of those agecnies would have roled into existing, revamped, or otherwise changed agecnies anytime between the depression and now. For example the FBI, part of the dept of justice, was bron in the 30's, but isn;t thought of as a new deal agency such as CCC or WPA. During the depression, while records were kept, not nearly as many statistical reports were generated, so you'd need to find someone who examined the fed and calucated all the agecny changes and total numbers of employees. OPM has some stats, but only as far back as '40 http://www.opm.gov/feddata/HistoricalTables/ExecutiveBranchSince1940.asp Militrary numbers are likley much easier to find on the net.
