My employer did not take out federal taxes. I was not aware of this, What should I do?
I started working in May 2008. I saw when I had a check stub before switching to direct deposit that I had a gross and then saw that the amt. was different for my take home. So I did not think too much about it. I brought in my W2 today to complete my taxes and they said my employer did not take it out. Yes, I cried cause I was going to use my money for a much needed down payment. What is going to happen, I did not file cause I want to call corporate to have them correct somehow. What can happen? I am scared and the amt. owed will be too much for me to pay. I know that I filled out my tax form at the beg. of employment the way I always do.

- it is your responsibility to pay your taxes, you have until April 15th to do so. put off filing until April 15th. [do the paperwork now, so you know how much you'll have to pay.] you might want to ask your employer why they aren't withholding taxes.
- You need to see what your filing status is and change it. Depending on how much you make per check, you might not be earning enough at one time for any federal tax to be deducted. If you are claiming Single and 0, and nothing is being pulled out, request to take an additional amount out per check. You can do this on a new W4. This is the reason why you should ALWAYS check your pay stub. Figure your taxes asap so that you know how much you owe (if any). Don't put it off!
- You have a few options. However, you have to pay the taxes and potential penalties either way. My suggestions are: 1.) Contact your employer to review your W-4 and DE-4 forms. If you filled the forms out correctly and they failed to process them, you could ask them to re-process payroll to correct your W-2 forms and avoid paying penalties to the IRS and State. You probably need to write a check to your employer for taxes owed. 2.) Take W-2 as is and prepare your 2008 tax return. Before you file, call the IRS and State to negotiate installment plans. Good luck!
- It is our responsibility to verify the information is correct on our check stubs every pay day. Now you will have to pay the taxes, since it is our obligations to pay taxes. Visit IRS website www.irs.gov and use their withholding calculator to know how many exemption you can claim and you won't be due a refund or owe IRS at the time of filing. Provide your employer a W4 so he/she can start taking withholding from your pay check. Learn to pay attention to what is going on with your pay.
- Well you will owe the taxes not taken out. I owed once myself and worked out a payment plan with the IRS since I didn't have the money up front to pay what I owed. Go on their website and check out pub #9465. You can use this if you owe less than $25,000. If over that then form 433F + 9465 will most probably have to be filled in. From my experience they will really work you which I will say is one thing truely positive about the IRS. I was also able to choose how much a month I wanted taken from my bank account to pay back the taxes I owed.
- how much did you make ? and how many dependents? and how many adjustments can you do to income. there is nothing you can do for 2008 if you owe money try to pay by april 15.but you can fix 2009 , fill out a new w-4 form for withholding.go online and fill out taxes on tax act or turbo tax they will ask you questions and add all your numbers ,then you get the news, free unless you print or e-file.
