Government Jobs??

I'm a college student, 19, and looking for a good job...My boyfriend is in the Army and he told me i should look for a government job (Like working for my county) because they usually have good pay, good hours, and you only work mon-fri and no holidays. Right now im a cake decorating apprentice and im not liking it. I have to be up at 4:30 in the morning and on my feet for 9 hrs a day...and I'm getting 7$ a hour for it. Does anybody have a government job? Any suggestions on how to get the job??

2. govt jobs is great, mostly unionize too. Unfortunately, also a place where a person becoming lazy and counter productive. It's like sort of public corporation welfare hang out and very addictive. Seldom a millionaire ever work for govt, unless he/she became politician.

4. actually, to clarify fetchrat's answer, the official website for Federal employment is www.usajobs.opm.gov you can usually find a lot of jobs posted on there, BUT i always find that they tend to be everywhere but where i am :) however, i found a job that sounded interesting via that site and applied and got it. granted, i had to move 3,000 miles away for this job, but that's ok! from the main site, select "Search Jobs" tab, and from there you can type in a keyword for something you are interested in, such as 'botany' or 'medicine' or 'gardening' (the latter of which can bring up such positions as Cemetary Careworker). you can also select the state/city you want to work in, and the job catagory you may be looking for work in, such as Postal Service. you can just search the job catagories, too, without having to put in any keywords. one note about this site is that, it really gives you almost Too Much Information about each position you find, which can be overwhelming to read and go through. when you find a job that looks appealing by name, basicly, after you glance over the general description just look at the tab that says "Duties" for a more in-depth job description, and the one that says "Qualifications" to see if you have what they need you to have for the job (including the near-bottom part of the Qualifications page, where they detail the KSA's (knowledge, skills, and abilities) they prefer you have). they post both permanant, AND non-permanant positions on this site, as well as seasonal (feel like working in the mountains in Montana, backpacking and tracking bear and collecting fur samples? i saw a seasonal job for this posted once). good luck!
5. www.usajobs.gov is the website for all gov't jobs. Get registered on that site so you can apply directly thru the website. (But remember no one is viewing your resume like on Monster.com, you have to apply to each position you want.) Once you work in the same position for 3 yrs, you are secure in your grade level and can get a job at another gov't agency. This is especially nice for military spouses who move from base to base. Having that "time in grade" makes it easier for them to find a new job. The benefits are good, holidays mimic the military holidays and the pay is steady. Performance standards are usually very clear as well. Good luck..
