Can you answer some question about Government jobs and Education Benefits from family members service?

Seeking information about something my father in law heard over the radio. Government jobs for Immigration Services so on and so forth. What are some of the jobs that I can do without any prior experience and where do I go to apply for them. Seeking 45k and up. I also am wondering what benifits exist for the grandchildren of people who have served in the armed forces. Are there any college benifits I can get using the GI Bill if my grandfather and other family members have served in the military?

  1. Mr Enigma - I'm gonna go ahead and just set you straight. All of your questions say gimme gimme gimme. You have no experience and want $45K/yr You haven't served but you want all the benefits of service members. I'll tell you this - some divisions have an association(eg. 82d Airborne Association) As a lifetime member my son gets a $1500 scholarship for college. it's not much but it helps. If you have a parent still enlisted they should be able to ask these questions for you. As far as the jobs are concerned just google the industry and see what companies pop up. But my main suggestion - Get out and get some experience, start as a cop thats a job that typically starts around mid $30K depending on your area. But put a little skin on the table man, use the benefits if they are there but don't get so caught up in looking to use those benfits solely because those jobs and benefits usually have a long application period and no guarantees at the end.
  2. There are benefits for children not grandchildren of veterans. Sorry. You'll have to join the military and get your own GI Bill. I think you need at least a Bachelor's degree or Master's degree for current open positions with the immigration services. http://jobsearch.usajobs.gov/jobsearch.asp?q=&jbf574=HSAB&jbf522=&salmin=&salmax=&paygrademin=&paygrademax=&FedEmp=N&tm=&sort=rv&vw=d&ss=0&brd=3876&FedPub=Y&caller=%2Fagency_search.asp&SUBMIT1.x=126&SUBMIT1.y=18
  3. You don't get college benefits from family members service. It looks like the latest law that that will be passed will allow for that, an absolutely STUPID idea, will pass, but not for past veterans service.
  4. The GI Bill is for Veterans. It is good for 10 years after we are discharged.....no legacy payments to our children or our grandchilden. These are benefits you will need to get off your computer and go earn yourself if you want them. Go look up US Border Patrol if you want to work in this area. No experience neccesary to walk, ride or drive all over the barren waste lands of TX looking for illegals that jumped into our country illegally. Of course you will need to earn your right into the Border Patrol Academy and successfully graduate to get and keep this job. The pay you may earn depends on many factors but it isn't going to be as cake-walk as it seems you would like for your ideal job. You can even find these jobs on Yahoo Hot Jobs. But something tells me this isn't what you are looking for, a real job with real responsibilities.
  5. GI bill is for those who served, not their family members. Spouses and children may use it if the AD member is killed or 100% disabled. You may qualify for a scholarship because of the family history, but not because a grandparent or uncle or aunt served.
