Why do Supreme Court Justices & federal judges hold their jobs for life?

Why do Supreme Court justices and federal judges hold their jobs for life? Also, what powers does the constitution give to federal courts?

1. So they don't have to make decisions that would please people so they would be re elected
2. The founding fathers wanted to avoid political pressure being put on the judges. The judges know that unhappy politicians can't remove them from the bench and so they are free to follow their own best counsel when ruling on cases.

4. That is a dogmatic big mistake. They should have terms for being in office say for 15 yrs maximum. The society changes and so should the judges.

7. its not for life, sorry i have to correct you, its a term of good behavior. they hold their jobs for that long because it is such an important job and the government needs consistency. so unless one dies or gets kicked off, then we get consistency.

So that they don't have to change their opinions around based on pandering to a base or worry about getting re-elected, which is what drives most politicians to be so crooked and dishonest - they'll do ANYTHING to get re-elected and maintain power. The Court, making such important decisions, needs to be above this type of behavior, they need to be free of the shackles which election brings.
