Joining the Marines AFTER becoming a Police Officer?
I know the federal law that provides job security for Police Officers with prior service commitments, but I was wondering how it would work if I wanted to go reserve or possibly active in the USMC after being hired? I have no prior military history. Would it be shunned? Could I be fired? Would it depend on the department? So would I be able to go Reserve USMC say after about 1 year into my career?

- You are protected by federal law. They would have to accommodate your military schedule.
- I don't believe you would be covered since you were not a military member before joining the police force. The police job isn't going to wait while you go through boot camp and training. You are only protected if you had already been enlisted in the military.
- Trooper is 100% correct (almost). Many Officers are members of a Reserve, or National Guard unit. In the event that you are activated for an extended period of time, you would have to go back through the academy for a refresher course. In the event that you wanted to go full active, you would have to resign from the department.
