Can the US government really do anything about companies moving jobs overseas?

We live in a free country, so how could the president really stop this? And why are the companies doing it? Is it because products can be manufactured cheaper in places like China? Even if that is the case, they're leaving millions of US employees jobless, right? So more and more people in our country won't be able to afford these products. Then aren't they shooting themselves in the foot? But back to my original question: What could the government do to stop this?

Public Comments

  1. its because of taxes and regulations that they move. Too much government involvement.
  2. The same excuse for them moving (regulations and cost) is what can be used to prevent them from moving. If we'd take a good look at trade policies and taxes on imports, we could nullify the incentive for companies to move overseas by making the cost negotiable to remaining in the states. Additionally, that would drive up the prices of foreign goods making more people willing to buy American because the cost is the same or maybe even less. The downside is Walmart will start cutting jobs and that could get ugly for a while until growth kicks in and more companies come back home or start up. We have a snowballing problem here where we try to save money by buying cheaper goods made overseas, the loss of sales revenue for US competitors forces them to cut costs (head overseas or cut jobs at home) and as the cycle continues the economy looks worse and worse because pay is lower and there are less jobs. With lower pay you are forced to buy cheaper goods, and the ball keeps rolling and rolling.
  3. Change the tax code. Put in incentives for hiring Americans and disincentives for having work done overseas. Not complicated at all. Bill Clinton did it and jobs were gradually returning. GW Bush un-did it and the jobs when bye-bye again. Duh.
  4. They were the ones giving them the Defense Contracts, outsourcing our information like Microsoft did to places like Russia, India and China...That's Insane and does Nothing for National Security or Worker Security! The Clinton's robbed American Citizens of Work for Free Trade and Nafta/Gatt.... Bid them a Fond farewell and don't Buy anything they make in Response as a Consumer and Worker....they are not Loyal. My suggestion is to start New Companies and Manufacture and Farm for ourselves!
  5. Most companies don't move cause of taxes and regulation they move for the cheap labor and some well educated. Tax imports more. We have the best consumers in world if a company wants access make them work for it. Also build an infrastructure that helps business, better schools, maybe tutorials on line for free, free wireless Internet, etc.
  6. Free global economy works both ways. Western countries never bothered about ruining poor countries when they exploited their natural resources. Even now do you think for a minute, when you hear that Microsoft, Intel or Coca Cola sell their products in other countries? Do you consider for a moment why America has to have a presence in the middle eastern countries? What do you think of all those skilled people like doctors, engineers and scientists who left their countries to serve in the USA? Some countries are selling products and some countries are selling services. How can you have one and stop the other? The answer to your question is, nothing! There is no way the government could stop outsourcing without hurting the economy on the whole. ~
  7. No. Don't think so. Not the governmment or companies. It's the folks back home. Can they live within their means and increase productivity. Excessive demands increase in rising cost of raw materials and labour in doing businesses. That lead them to move overseas. Why not work and share and care for one another back home. Luke 9.25,55-56,60 What do you think?
  8. The government is the entity that enabled the job loss in the first place
  9. Tax policy is correct. If it is cost effective to send jobs overseas then it is the board of directors must do the right thing and send those jobs overseas. If they didn't they would be going on a crusade to save America at the cost of the stock holders and some other company would eventually undercut them. If we lived in a world of aware people that would keep buying from the above said company because they hired in America, then that would be different. If you change the tax policy so that when the "bean counters" go to the board of directors they say "due to tax policy change, it is now cost effective to hire in America, provide benefits work our employees only 40 hours per week" .. then it is the responsibility for them to do just that. Think about it, when a job is sent over seas that is THAT much more money that is no longer going to the tax system. If you have less people paying, we all that are have to pay more. When people do not have medical insurance, we all have to pay more taxes. When you have a company that works 2 people 60 hours per week instead of hiring another person then you have less tax payers and fewer consumers. So it actually makes ALOT of since to charge corporations that make us pay more in taxes... more taxes. This is needed to offset the lack of taxes being paid by employees that do not work in America and the other items mentioned - is just plain simple logic. To toss your hands in the air and say "there is nothing we can do" is such a lazy and pathetic thing to say and then to turn around and call yourself an American. America is BY THE PEOPLE, FOR THE PEOPLE. Not by the people working 60 hours per weeks so the top 2 percent can get richer. Corporations do NOT create jobs - the middle class does. When we can afford to go out and eat - THAT creates jobs. You can not outsource the service jobs or constructions jobs - these ARE and always will be American jobs. So building a middle class is the way to provide the needed income for that to happen. We need people back being coffee shop owners and less starbuck corporate outlets. The more money that stays in your community is the less that is "leaving town with your hard earned money". The government IS the people - that is what levels the playing field. Regulation is the ONLY answer. Regulation is we the people demanding that corporations do not own us, but instead we own the right to allow them to have a corporate charter. By having a tax policy that destroys American jobs, the "corporate" party is actually doing corporate harm - hence - yes .. shooting themselves in the foot. If we THINK and DO and work TOGETHER we can once again get reigns on the bus that is leaving town will all OUR money in it.
