What is the difference between a state and federal law?

Ok so i went to the website of: Georgia labor of laws or whatever and this is for the age i need to be to get a job. But it said the STATE LAW says you must be at least 12 years of age to get a job. And the FEDERAL LAW says that you must be at least 14 years of age. Well im turning 13 in May and wanted to know if i can get a job. I am confused haha. So help would be appreciated. xoxo And im homeschooled so. And i read about everything i just wanted to know whats the difference between a state and federal law and since the state law said at least 12 years of age and im turning 13 in may if i can get a job. OH and what kind of jobs? Even if i have to be 14. HELP!

  1. follow your state law. think of it like minimum wage. Federal is lower than alot of states...you follow your state law which also cant conflict a state law.
  2. State law takes precendence over federal law. Everything is based first on those laws and then will fall under federal if there is no clear definition in the state law. More than likely, you will just need to get a work card issued. This will restrict the hours and/or days that the state will allow you to work. A parent must go with you and you must have a job first in order to get a work card.
