Does state time (PERS) transfer towards Federal time retirement?

I overheard that one or the other transfers and the other does not. (State to Federal or Federal to state.) Unfortunately, I cannot remember which was which. Also, what is the explaination for this? Does anyone know of any jobs that participate in PERS besides the State of Ohio positions?

Public Comments

  1. Call Cal-Pers and ask them?
  2. In Nevada, neither is transferable. And Social Security benefits are offset by the State pension.
  3. State "time" will not transfer to Federal time. The PERS is similar in design to the federal retirement known as FERS however, the federal government will not subtract the state time from the 20 yr. retirement time for law enforcement. The benifit to that is, if you wish, is that after 57 you cannot work Federal law enforcement but you can usually go back to the state. Also, If you have any military time, that will count towards your time off. Xyears of service=xhours+4hours per pay period you accumilate towards vacation and sick. Hope this helps.
