If you work for the Federal government and then get hired by the State government will your time transfer?

I worked for the Fed. Gov. for 5years and now am looking for a state job I'm wondering am I going to have to start over in time or will it transfer over The state is GA and if you don't know the answer then don't answer or leave any smart a$$ comments!

  1. Depends on the state...which you conveniently left out. Why don't you check with the state department you want to work for instead of asking people who cannot answer your question based on the information you gave us?
  2. I, too am a state of GA employee. Unfortunately the state and federal governments are not connected Retirement wise. The state is under Employee's Retirement System and the feds is under the Civil Service Retirement system OR the Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS). What you can do is contact whichever retirement system you will be placed under and see if they will allow you to purchase "retirement service credits" based upon your time with the state. I doubt it but it doesn't hurt to ask. If they do allow you to do this, depending on how much they require you to pay, you can purchase the time once you've obtained a quote of the amount. It will vary since the state of GA on takes 1.5% per pay period from their employee's paycheck. Other states, like Texas, take 6%. There is a disparate difference there and if it's like the Feds, then you'll be responsible for that difference plus any interest.
