Am I using the USA Jobs site correctly?
I searched several major cities and couldn't find more than 63 results for any of them. Many of the jobs I found were very specialized. Chicago 50 miles of 60606, within the last 30 days. 63 results Dallas 50 miles of 75250, within the last 30 days. 51 results New York City 50 miles of 10027, within the last 30 days. 52 results Houston 50 miles of 77001, within the last 30 days. 21 results Los Angeles 50 miles of 90001, within the last 30 days. 56 results Am I not using the site correctly? Or is the federal government no the great source of jobs I thought it was?

- Broaden your search. Right now the Federal Government is searching for very skilled people. Increasingly so, jobs are requiring more education, higher skills and experience. The Feds also contract out alot of work as they don't have the internal staff of the skills they need right now. In the next few months usajobs.gov is going to be changing...many jobs in fed gov, for e.g. DOD, are missing from the database.....many are military pathways, or ex-military. (former Fed/DC)...keep looking you'll find something...also try state government. (if you want public service position)
- go to www.usajobs.gov Click on the Large SEARCH button. Choose one city at a time, but click nothing in the job category section. (This will allow all jobs in one specific area to come up.) Under "Applicant Eligibility", there are several topics listed that you could answer yes. But if you don't meet any of these qualifications (veteran, former federal employee...) then click NO in this area. At the very bottom, make sure you click "detailed" not "brief". This will give you descriptions of the job. Bachelor's degree levels are GS-5 -7. For a GS-9 or above, you'll need either a Master's degree or a qualifying accredidation or years of specific experience. Getting in at a lower level won't prevent you from moving up within the same agency. Moving expenses aren't always allowed, so don't choose "big" cities unless you are willing to incur the moving costs. Get registered on the site and get your resume/transcripts all uploaded to your computer. When you apply for a job, answer the KSA's completely and thoroughly. Your answers could mean the difference in an interview. Good luck..
