How should I list race on job applications?

My heritage is mixed cuacasian and Native American. I meet the basic requirements of a government recognized tribe in terms of % of native blood. When the US federal government attempted (decades ago) to catalog the Native American population in the area where my family lived they basically hid the fact that they were natives. Because of that, I cannot prove my heritage to the tribe. I am curious if I should mark Native American on job applications. I mean, it is my heritage, but I am not a member of a tribe. And then, I have a few Native physical traits, but most people simply think that I am white. Do you think tribal membership is that important? I guess I am considering that people who are mixed white/asian and white/african-american do not belong to any sort of formal organization. For them, having some white ancestors doesn't necessarially make them white, right? What do you think? What would you do?

  1. Black...helps for affirmative action
  2. My own feeling about questions about race is that they continue the process of racial discrimination. What does it matter, when you get down to it, what race you are? So, what i do is refuse to answer the question. i do this on the Census also.
  3. what the heck kind of job are you applying for that asks for your race? I thought that was illegal as all get out these days....
  4. Except when voluntarily filling out the EEOC form attatched to an application, it is illegal to specifically ask for race on an application.
  5. Mark Native American since there are lots of whites in the workforce. It'll definitely help. Not all Native Americans know their ancestor's tribe affiliation. Not a problem..
  6. It doesn't make any difference if you mark native american or caucasian on your application. if they don't hire you due to discrimination, then you can sue them. I am Caucasian, but as most Americans, I am such a heinz variety, I can claim virtually anything.
