Is it true that is is very hard to get fired from a federal government job?

- Yes. True as 1 + 1 = 2. You must be guilty of fraud, embezzlement, or misappropriation to be fired from your government job. Incompetence or gross negligence is not enough to lose your federal government.
- Sadly this is very true. Go into any federal office and you will instantly recognize the result of that policy. (DMV for example)
- It's pretty hard unless you piss off people at the top, then your life becomes hell.
- Yes My mom is a manager for the "Feds" in Washington, D.C. She has been for years. Mostly it's the older ones that are getting close to retirement. They can tell you to the day (some of them) when they are retiring, and how you can't fire me because it's age discrimination. She gets so upset when some of the real losers get shuffled from one department to hers"departmental re-organizations"; happen every three years or sooner. These guys and gals won't even learn to use new computer or software program. The see others working 10-12 hour days and they go home after eight hour days and smile as they head the door. Here is the drill to get rid of them. Step 1. Identify the Slacker after enough people *itch about the person not wanting to finish work when everyone else needs it done. Step 2. One verbal counseling to try and get there "ya know" in gear. Which never works! She says. Step 3. 3 written reports over x months then signed by bosses boss BUT he wants to retire without losing his retirement pay or any blemishes on his record so he just tosses the thing in the can. Step 4. Mom tries to find ways to make the best of it until the next re-org.
- Unfortunately that is very true. The civilian fed workforce is unionized (not all jobs are, but MANY.) I managed employees across 22 agencies in DC....most were great, but the employees we depended upon were impossible to get work done on time. Of course, the flip side is you can make much more money outside the gov, working in the private sector if you are skilled.
- I work for the federal government. At one point in time it was said that is is hard to fire people, but now that many agencies are switching over from the GS pay scale to NSPS pay bands it is easier to get rid of workers. The new system is performance based.
