Would you leave a Federal government job to work at a State government job?

Some have said this is a step down. But if the State job pays more and has more desirable duties, would you do it? The yearly raises are better with the federal job, and I would soon make as much as the higher-paying State job with the cost of living increases alone. But I hate my fed job. Is leaving federal for state a bad move?

  1. No, if the state job is going to make you happy then you should go for it. Because at the end it doesnt matter how much money you make it if you dread waking up in the morning and going to work.
  2. personal choice ultimately based on your circumstances. Fed government often has greater and faster opportunities for promotion but often this can mean relocating, sometimes to another State. State Government can be the same in that you could relocate to another city within that State but usually the jobs are more static and filled locally. Essentially the day you wake up and say "i gotta go to work " is the time to stsrt looking for a new job. For me if i was a single person with no major ties i would opt for federal as i dont mind travel and new places. For a married family person , they usually really want a static workplace so State is the better option...but to each their own
  3. Why not go to a another agency? You can keep your grade, get the COL increase and remain employed by fed. gov't. I've thought about it too because the benefits are better and cheaper working for the State where I live. I figure when I'm tired of this place I'll just look for a job at another agency in my area instead of relocating and with the budget...you'll be lucky to get someone to pay for your relocation.
  4. If it were me I would go for the more duties and the job that you would like so you will grow in your career. I'm in the federal government and will probably leave to the city government if I ever get a better opportunity. If you have less than five years invested in the federal government , it probably won't affect your retirement.
  5. Both have similar security. Follow your heart and work at something you will enjoy. Money is a tool. It is one of the last things that you should consider. It is necessary, but at what expense?
