As federal Jobs go lets say for GS-5 -7, what is the average vacation time within the first year?
which holidays are observed? I have heard that the hours are insane like 12 -16hr shifts is this true? or does it depend on the job? Immigration Agents I currently hold a state job where I am very comfortable in I would probably be loosing pay and getting more responsibility if I leave it, should I or should I stay and enjoy the easy goingness of this job? help- familiy guy undecided!

- When you join the government there are leave categories based on time of service. When you have been with the government for 0-3 years you accrue 4 hours of leave every pay period (there are 26 pay periods) for a total of 13 days a year. 3-15 years you accrue 6 hours every pay period and after 15 you accrue 8 hours every pay period. As a CBP Officer I can tell you that yes, we work a ton of OT, rotating shifts, and rotating days off. We get Holiday Pay for all Federal Holidays but you will work just about all of them. It is doubtful you would give up that much pay. You are automatic to GS 11 and can earn up to (35,000 more in OT and shift differential pay). We earn double time so it is easy to reach (I did last year). We are going to Law Enforcement retirement in July so you must be under 37 to be hired after that. That being said...I am transferring to our seized property unit where there is no OT and it is a set Monday through Friday, so I can spend more time with my family. i am giving up nearly 40,000 in raises and OT. However I am gaining back about 500 hours of my life and money does not buy time.
