How does having noncompetitive eligibility status for federal jobs work and does it help?
I am ending my Americorps service and am receiving Non-Competitive Eligibility for Federal Government Service for one year. I was wondering if this is a legitimate leg up on civilians in receiving a federal job or just a bunch of hot air. I currently hold an undergraduate I received in 2007.

- it means that you take the test and as long as you pass it with a minimal score you get placed on a priority hire list. Do you get points (like veterans), as well?
- When you are searching for a Federal Position on USAJOBS, you check the box which says you are a person with non-competitive eligibility, and this will open up a variety of positions, you otherwise may not have access or eligibilty to apply to. This is a legitimate leg up to get your foot in the door to the Federal Sector. When you look for a position on USAJOBS you will see contact information you can call or email the HR Specialist in charge of reqruiting for the position. You will still need to apply to a variety of positons, and holding an undergraduate degree will get you in starting at the GS-5 level in most cases. Take advantage of this opportunity rather than work on competing through other arenas. Hope this helps.
