What is the best way to get a well paying government job with 4 years military background?

I am a teacher now, but I have had 4 years in the U.S. Air Force, and would like to get back in the government system. I was in the security field while in the air force, and I have a pretty nice resume now, with a diverse background. I live in the Baltimore, MD area.

  1. How about here.
  2. Start with http://www.usajobs.com and especially http://www.hirevetsfirst.gov/ The fasttrack to breaking back in to government service right now is to volunteer for overseas assignment in the hot zones (Iraq and Afghanistan). Also consider the current job postings at Halliburton and KMD's web sites. It's all one big soup. Fanially, an often overlooked opportunity is the Foreign Service Written Examination, a competitive process for selecting American diplomats. More info at state.gov
  3. Hi, With your back-ground you are easily marketable. Over seas jobs or Alberta Canada is crying for people and it is a good country. Just some early morning thoughts.
  4. Getting into the system is not easy but it is not difficult either. The VA is an excellent first step, they would have a large collection of opportunities for many agencies. You can also check Homeland security as you have a security background and they are currently hiring for border and TSA agents. In addition to these options the DOD has an excellent education system that would afford you the opportunity to travel to and work for DOD schools for dependent children of service members. last the best way is to check with each agency's job listing andf apply for everything.
  5. Apply for civil service jobs. Do you have veteran's preference?
