If my job with holds federal taxes, but not state, do i need to do anything special next tax year?

My job has a limited accounting department. They withhold federal (Social Security and such) but not state. I heard a rumor that I would have to declare 4 times a year. Is that true? Do I have to do anything special next year or just normal taxes? Obviously I’ll owe money, but am I missing anything?

  1. Many states, like the federal government, require the filing of quarterly estimated taxes if your withholding is insufficient. Rules vary from state to state. Check the Department of Revenue site for your state to see what the specific rules are for filing estimated taxes for your state.
  2. And some states do not have a state Income tax. So depends on where you live and where you earn the money.
