- Until Margaret Thatcher the Unions were running the country. There was a closed shop in many large industries, and the Union leadership could choose to go on strike whenever they wanted. The government of Maggie changed all that, plus they stood up to the unions like the Miners undewr Arthur Scargill. This means now that while we no longer have any miners, or even any heavy industry, at least the unions aren't in control!
