- If you're working part time, you're likely exempt from having to pay taxes, especially if you're under 18.
- if you want a good refund at the end of the year, and you filed single and 0, then the federal takes out 10% of gross wages, and state usually gets at least 2% gross wages.
- Your company withholds money each paycheck that is payable to the federal government. If you still live with your parents then they will probably claim you as their independent. Then on the W-4 form you'll put 0 for the number of exemptions, in addition to this you can request to withhold a certian dollar amount each paycheck as well. Based on how much you make and what you put on your W-4 will determine how much is withheld. Then there is Social Security and Medicare (FICA) which is taken from your paycheck as well at 7.65%, that is 6.2% for social security (up to $102,000 of income) and 1.45% for medicare.
- Go to PayCheckCity, enter your data, and it will compute your taxes and take home pay: http://www.paycheckcity.com/netpaycalc/netpaycalculator.asp
- How much your employer takes out of your paycheck depends on the number of exemptions you claim. The exemptions are specified by you when you submit the W4 form to your employer. Here is a tool that you can use to determine the exemptions to put on your W4. http://www.qcktax.com/w4-calculator.php
