My dad and i?

Just to give you a little back-story. When i was 18 i received a large sum of money from the government after my mom died in 9/11. I lived with my dad in a house in NJ that he was trying to rebuild. After i turned 18 he made me feel like it was my responsibility to pay for the house, buy a new roof, pay the contractor and buy out the mortgage. Basically spending what i had to set up my life. One day in April he accused me of something and i felt like it was the last straw and moved across the country. So fast forward now it's almost 3 years later, i haven't gone back, i live far away have a job and go to school. But i have all this money invested in another place. The problem is my father doesn't work. He refuses. I have two younger siblings that live with him, and one that lives with his mom. He uses there Social Security to live off of. Now i have come to find out that he has back property taxes that haven't been payed at all. I want to sell this house and be done, but is it right?

  1. If he gets too far behind in the taxes they will auction the house and you wont have it to sell, so maybe that is your answer sell the house before you don't have it anymore.
  2. Your responsibility has ended towards him but I think you need to consider your siblings. What do they need? Do they still need that home to live in?
  3. Is the house in your name or his name? It sounds like you payed for the house when you say you bought out the mortgage. If you payed for the house, I would tell your dad that you would pay the taxes if he transfers the house to your name. Then the house would be yours. Its hard to say this, but you may have to evict him or take over your siblings finances. Get a lawyer. Soon.
