A terrorist attack or hazardous spill could also cause the disaster preparedness plan of your community to be put into effect. There are many organizations at the federal level with disaster responsibilities including the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the Department of Transportation, the Army Corps of Engineers, and many others. States also have offices of emergency services. Local government agencies have police and fire departments that take care of disaster responsibilities. All communities plan for disasters. So, how prepared is your community?

  1. How about calling your local police or fire station and talking to someone in person. An individual police officer or fire fighter will not be able to fully answer your question. He/she will only know his/her own part in the grand plan. You would have to talk to someone in city gov't at a planning level.
