Can I renege on a conditional job offer with the Federal Government?
I just received a conditional job offer with the federal govt. the job is good, but the pay is a little less than what I am making now. I think it will be at least 6 months before I can actually start at the new job - the thing is, I'm really interested in the job as a contingency, in case I lose my current job. Could I accept the conditional job offer, and later say "no thanks" to the govt. once my security clearance and health check are complete?

- Sure.
- Unless you're signing a contractual agreement, I'd say you could turn down the job at any time.
- If this is going to be on a contract, then no. If it is not going to be a job under contract, then yes you could.
- Nope...it's a contract! This is the Feds not your local WalMart, they don't take kindly to people wasting their time!
- If worse comes to worse, get a written order from your doctor saying the job would be stressful and not recommended. That even works in the military.
- If you are getting security clearance and health check..there may be some kind of commitment needed. In this post 9/11 government, there may be papers you have to sign before getting any sort of security clearance. Read the fine print.
- it is a conditional job offer, conditions are not yet met. you can back out, the employer (fed. gov.) can back out. government employment is no different then the real world and testing, background checks etcetra done by a prospective employer are done on their dime, as an expense of operating the business. until the details of employment are set and you actually sign the contract nothing is definite.
