How do I become a Wildland Firefighter in Canada?

I'm currently a Wildland Firefighter with the US Forest Service in the United States. I'm considering a move to Canada and would like to get a job as wildland firefighter up there as well. In the States, the US Forest Service and the National Park Service are in charge of hiring wildland firefighters, but on the Canadian Forest Service's website, I didn't see any links for fire employment. Where does one go in Canada to be a wildland firefighter and what department of government deals with their hiring, if any? Thank you. On a side note I'm considering Vancouver as my destination.

  3. Unlike in the states the provinces are responsible for forest fires here, check with the Province you are thinking of moving too. For the feds it is Parks Canada that is responsible for National Parks but I do not know if they have their own crews of dedicated fire fighters. Your best bets would be Ontario and BC and if you speak French Quebec also these are the biggest Provinces with large forested areas. Good luck on your search and welcome if you decide to come
  4. The Canadian federal government does not employ any firefighters--or at least, very few of them. The real action is with the governments of the various provinces, which are analogous to states in the U.S.. For example, here in Saskatchewan, firefighting is handled by the provincial ministry of the environment; the ministry's headquarters is in Regina and the firefighting operations center is in Prince Albert. Best to apply to head office. Go to www.gov.sk.ca and look for "environment". Pilots are hired on seasonal contracts, as are most firefighters, although there is a regular cadre of firefighting experts and instructors. Purely for the record, the aerial firefighting fleet (the element with which I am most familiar) includes six CL-215s and several Convairs configured for firefighting.
