Is Federal job moer secure than most jobs?
Public Comments
- Probably. Federal jobs do not usually have the connotation of profitability associated with them, as private sector jobs do. Federal jobs rely on taxes, deficit spending or a combination, and don't really "have to pay for themselves," as do private sector jobs. This means that a federal job is even relatively more secure during a recession. Another benefit, to the employee, is that cost of living raises and adjustments, since not reliant upon fair market competition, should be more forthcoming. The latter is important during times when central banks are implementing monetary policies that increase money supplies (this is called devaluation, occurs constantly, causes inflation, crippling and shackling the private markets ensuring less freedom). Lastly, with a federal job, you are more likely to be paid, based upon most of your experience, skills and education, regardless of their relevance to the position.
- Not necessarily. I recently left a federal job because of the lack of stability. I worked for a branch of the Interior on a term basis, and at the end of the terms it was always up in the air whether the budget would be approved and my job would be there next year. My former boss, who holds a PhD and has a family is in this same situation right now and his contract expires in April and doesn't know if he has a job or not. A lot depends on what branch of the federal government you are looking at, but I know that they are starting to outsource a lot of their positions as funding comes and goes. One last example was when Katrina hit I was out of work for a month because they alloted money from our department for the crisis, so to sum it all up nothing is secure in this crazy world today.
- yes..........
- If you can get hired on a permanent basis, as opposed to a seasonal or term basis, then yes, Federal jobs are more secure. I currently work for the Federal government for the Department of the Treasury, and we get cost of living increases every year (not much, but it's better than nothing), and pay increases based on performance. I will say this though, I've had to encounter more difficult personalities working for the Federal government than in the private sector. With that being said, I've considered going back to the private sector, but haven't done it because of the tough times recently - I'm more secure where I'm at. If you're ever interested in looking for a Federal job, all federal openings are posted at www.usajobs.gov. Good luck!
- It can be. There is a trend toward pay based on performance and there are set criteria and competencies to be satisfied. Also, you have to meet a probationary period that can vary in length. Once you meet these standards, then, I think it is generally more secure than the private sector, if you are a permanent employee. I like the atmosphere and sense that you are fulfilling a mission, rather than trying to make a bunch of money.
