Can being in the US Coast Guard experience help me get a job?
I have been wondering if the experience that i get in the US Coast Guard can help me get a job with the DEA, FBI, ICE, or any other federal agency once I get out of the military and have been honorable discharge without me going to college or any university?

- Of course. Employers like the military experience because you know how to work and get to work on time. Other than, it would depending on your rating in the service as to what experience you have for a particular job. I believe government jobs do give priority to prior military.
- *Why would you want to leave the coast guard? I've always regretted changing my mind about joining up. You can still get your college education and be paid for it. You have a chance at moving up in rank and retiring with good benefits at a young age,and can pretty well pick what jobs you want after retiring, due to the knowledge you can accumulate while there.
- well just being a veteran u can get a preference over anybody else that applies and it also depends on what ur mos is and if it applies to what you are applying for like if u get a mos that requires a high level security clearance then the transitiom will be easier cause u potentially going to need that to get in fbi almost all federal jobs so the answer to your question yes it will help having military experince
- I am a former CG myself. You will not be able to join any federal law enforcement agency without a college degree. I am currently developing a Criminal Justice degree and finishing out to FBI training. What the Coast Guard will do however is the following -Give you priority in the applicant listings -Pay for your college through GI Bill -Give you a few applicable credits in college towards a degree - Show the employers that you are able to meet a standard of training -Give you a head start in training (weapons, policies, narcotics, law) -Gives the employer a DHS background check Every once and awhile a Federal LE agency will waiver certain military specialities (linguistics, special forces, EOD), but these are few and far between to occur. As of right now FBI HRT still requires you to have a college degree on top of 3 years tactical experience.
- An active duty SpecWar team will better serve your future desires. You can get some experience in "boarding" and "search and seizure" but active duty big 4 is the way to go. I applied for the FBI quite a few years back... darn shame I'm a white male or I would be loving life right now in that job! You will need a 4 year college degree for most federal law enforcement agencies. Most prefer some form of law oriented degree to be a top notch candidate.
