My new place of employment will fail if we get inspected! How sould I fix it?
I just got a new job...and i totally stepped into a pile of pooh! Seriously... nothing in up to code or done according to regulation. I have never managed anyone bofore and now I find my self having to change how 8 people have been working for ever. Hmm.. to make things worse the owner for the (very small) company knows that things are not being done correctly and that it will take too long to do it right... at least in his eyes. Should I have a sit down with everyone and try to change everying at one (the inspection from the federal government could be any day) or should I change one thing at a time till it is all taken care of? My position is basically to make sure that all the production and testing is in accordance to federal reguations

- I would make a list of everything that is being done incorrectly or inefficiently. Then prioritize it. Start with the BIG violations, the ones that could be automatic shutdown. Then move down the list as fast as possible. Don't try to tackle all at once, because you might not realize yet how one thing affects another and then you might end up having to do double work. But do have a meeting, that way you can get everyone on board.
- Not your problem its the owners, but if you try to help out then you might get a raise from the owner.
- You know the old adage " Some things should happen for the best"? If Your company really needs to be overhauled, so be it. It was meant to be.
- you don't have a lot of time, but while doing this you should try to read how to win friends and influence people. It will help. -prioritizing works, and you need to get everyone on board maybe an incentive program...
- You might start with the State, There are some states that offer pre-OSHA inspections that do not fine you but give you a write up of every OSHA violation they find, it is voluntary in our State, (KS) If you are working with the State, OSHA Cannot inspect you until you are finished with the state inspection, corrections and extensions. If it is not OSHA, there could be a state program for other things as well. Some good advice up there (mostly) but talk with other non-competing company's in your area that fall under the same regulation, buy their compliance person a lunch, and just ask them. Most people are more than happy to help, we have all been beginners, and most of us will help if asked. As far as the employees, if it is your responsibility, grab the bull by the horns and tell them how you want it done, better to ruffle a few feathers and accomplish something than living with the stress of tip-toeing around stuff. Get it out in the open and move on to bigger things. Good Luck, One more thing, if your boss is not committed to spending the time and money to get your processes correct, find another job as fast as you can. Supervisors can get drug into the mess.
- Hire me - I'll fix it!
