Could this really happen?

Let's presume that ALL manufacturing jobs were farmed out to other countries. Could the US economy sustain itself on what remains? If so, how. What would be those industries that remain? Please add to the list below. Service Sales Farming Entertainment Travel/Tourism Transportation Government Employment

  1. not long............a country can only survive on "entertainment" jobs for so long...
  2. artists/musicians - creating, not performing and thus not entertainment architecture fashion design interior design psychology psychiatry counseling child care nursing teaching I don't know how much of that would fall under the 'service' category, but it might spark your imagination
  3. The category of services is VERY broad. It is possible to be a serviced based economy to an extent. However, the political and military ramifications of this decision are "spooky", to say the least. How would we produce the military weapons we need to defend ourselves if we give up this part of the manufacturing puzzle. I don't see it happening. Those who are our allies today, could be our enemies tomorrow. The only two countries I can not foresee turning on America are England and Israel.
  4. Bankers Lawyers Doctors Researchers Repair Construction What service industry do you work in?
  5. Medical research- something we still excel at in the US. Technology- Development (we have the Chinese make what we dream up) There are many countries that survive on little more than tourism and the service industry. Ever been to Ireland? How about France, the Netherlands, Australia, Greenland or even Africa? Yes, they are surviving. But at what cost? Each has an unemployment rate of over 11%. At least we don't have to depend on a single industry to survive like Saudi Arabia or any of the oil rich countries of the middle east. Without oil, those countries are pretty much hosed. We as Americans should do our part and try to keep as much manufacturing jobs here. Without them, we loose that much more of our independence from other countries. We are diverse in our people, our resources and ability to survive without other countries influence. We are fortunate enough to have what we need to survive on our countries resources alone. Isn't that one of our principals as a country- independence? Stop buying crap from China, Korea, Mexico & Brazil and tell the retail stores of the world we want our independence back! That isn't to say boycott Wal-mart, K-mart or any other big box mart's. Just say no to things that should be produced here in the US, but rarely are. Little things like socks, underwear, other apparel, electronics (yes we still make some here) tires, etc. If we could just change our focus on a few products, then slowly switch to more and more, we could have a big impact on this weak economy. It's the little things that can make a huge impact in the world. Think people, for just one second before you buy anything. The difference between buying those socks made in the Dominican Republic and spending $1 more on ones made in the US means that you could be putting an American out of work. Make the conscience effort to change the way you buy things!
