This was kind of an eye-opener for me! A 2006 audit showed federal, state and local governments are among the biggest employers of the half-million persons in the U.S. illegally using "non-work" Social Security numbers — numbers issued legally, but with specific instructions that the holders are not authorized to work in the U.S. "Let's clean up our own house, let's especially clean up the federal employment of all those working for the federal government," said Rep. Steve King, Iowa Republican and ranking member of the House Judiciary Committee's immigration subcommittee. The Social Security Administration used to, but no longer does, issue non-work numbers to legal aliens who were not authorized to work but needed a number to obtain a federal or state benefit or service. Still, hundreds of thousands of those immigrants used the numbers to get a job. According to the 2006 audit by the Social Security inspector general, 17 of the 100 worst employers using employees with non-work numbers were government agencies: seven federal agencies, seven state agencies and three local governments. I thought it was the agricultural industry...That is really surprising. I learned yesterday that an illegal alien driving a car, then getting pulled over, having no license and NO ability to get one (because their illegal) only has to pay a $100 fine!

NO HUMAN BEING IS ILLEGAL by the way, when people work with fake SS's, doesnt that mean that the government collects taxes without the worker collecting benefits? It looks like immigrants are giving taxes and not receiving benefits... you should thank them.

nope, that was my first answer! i live on a military base and we have been going throuhg housing rennovations. the majority of the workers i see on the houses are mexican and not to stereotype, but c'mon...i'm sure not all of them are legal.

not me where i worked was a military building that had to let 10 people go because they discovered that the 10 people had the same social security number this was an outsourcer that sent them over governments taking shortcuts and it hurts

What is surprising is that the SSA does not have an enforcement division--or if it does, it is not utilized. Shouldn't these numbers and other illegal numbers or stolen numbers trigger some sort of flag in the system? It doesn't appear that the SSA has any sort of detection system in place. Maybe we should all write our congressperson(s) and ask that such a system be put in place.
using social security numbers incurs tax obligations to the actual owner of that number. This is why there are sanctuary cities we are completely overrun with this issue. I say fine all businesses that employ them use the money to further enforce the issue.

I heard this story this morning, and I was very surprised. If they can't verify their own employees, how can they enforce laws on private companies to make them verify? What hypocrisy...
I was going to guess "farms" as the biggest employer. As far as the government being hypocritical...I'm never surprised by that. Congress has always made laws that apply to us, but not to them.

well, i am an illegal inmigrant of the united states, ilike this place it's kool ^^ i pay taxes as everyone does i have something called "IRS individual Taxpayer Identificacion Number" wich is a document with my name and 9 numbers similar to a ssn wich i don't have, what i really have to say it's that it is very difficult to get a job like this wich sucks by the way, but the good thing it's that living here it's nice and that now i speak 2 languages so thank you all for that i guess ... lol
Not at all, the bureaucracy is filled with nothing more than hypocrites who feel they are above the law. If the entire bureaucracy folded tomorrow the world would be a far better place.
