SINCE when did people working to make life better for the community become so wrong . COULD it be the government ,now run by corporate america and its intrests have sold out the working man . NO longer do we come together on anything and we all still have the same problems that have plagued man for centuries . the working man only wants whats his and for people to give him the chance to own a piece of land , a secure job outside of the local and federal jobs so prevelent today .this is only creating more poverty and a wider gap between those who have security and those who do not. i have seen both sides of america corporate greed and the working man . the numbers do not reflect the attitude of most americans . WAKE up ,those people who are living the dream are all part of government by the people for it's own self intrests.

Wealthy industrialists (capitalists) control the media and socialism has always been a bad idea (word) to them. If the world was entirely socialist, wealthy people would have to work just like everyone else.

To answer your question. Socialism was never a good word in America. The American communist party woke up to this fact back in the 30's and relabeled themselves liberals instead of socialists. They then took over the democratic party. That's why Ronald Reagan became a Republican. Your long monologue under your question is alarming
Maybe you should get out more. I recently participated in a project sponsored by Home Depot to build a playground for developmentally disabled children. Home Depot donated all the equipment and all the participants were volunteers. It happens everyday all across this country. It's not socialism. It's community spirit. It has nothing to do with "ism"s at all you dolt. It has to do with human spirit. Quit trying to label everything in terms of politics.
Well, socialism didn't give Americans the lifestyle we have and enjoy. Socialism is definitely the way to go if you are unmotivated and don't have dreams of two cars, a 3 br 2ba house with a couple acres. Corporate America needs educated and motivated individuals to operate the corporation. A corporation isn't a monster rather it is a union of professionals providing a product that is sold to people who want and need the product. It is called free enterprise. So when did free enterprise become a bad word? Probably when you decided you wanted someone else to provide for you. Just realize that if someone else provides for you, you won't get much. Ask our friends who lived under the Soviet Union. They are experts on what socialism provides. And by the way, I am Swedish, Sweden is a socialist nation. Taxes in a socialist nation are near 75% of your income. Getting "ahead" is much more difficult when you cannot choose what to do with your earnings. Trust me.

Socialism became a bad word courtesy of Senator Joseph McCarthy back in the 1950s when it was all too easy for folks in the media to *deliberately* confuse Communism and Socialism for a quick ratings boost in the politically charged days of the Early Cold War against that Soviet Menace. And, well.... Like one answerer already put it, if we had a fully socialist system in place in our government, *rich folks* would have to work for a living. They wouldn't be able to just sit up there high on the hog, endlessly reaping the rewards of their parent's investments (not even their work, but where they put their money) while attacking everyone else they see beneath them--that is, the poorest 80%, that is EIGHTY PERCENT that is, of the population. But....in all fairness, if we had a fully socialist system in place, what passes for the modern Democratic system wouldn't gain any traction either, because such a system *would NOT* be able to tolerate any perpetual ghetto-style poverty like what we have going on in both the hearts of our cities and the depths of our half-rural Trailer Park Towns (any small town where at least half the resident housing available is by Trailer Park). Simply put, our poor people would either be given enough resources to get back to work again, and then *genuinely* made to get back to work (stubborn, but subtle insistence--if not by being literally drafted into a Public Works Agency), or they'd basically be encouraged to get out of the system at least temporarily, by way of either pursuing an education or leaving the country. And a fully socialist American would NOT tolerate immigration the way we do. Legal, Illegal, whatever, it would happen a lot LESS if at all. So what do we have instead? What we have is a hybrid, something that is mostly Laissez-Faire Corporatist (think Mussolini Fascist) Capitalism (look back to the Gilded Age of the Robber Barons back in the late 1880s to 1890s), but has just enough *minimally funded and poorly executed* socialisms to keep folks from openly revolting against the Rich guys. Usually. When most people can still work for the man, and choose to do so. Enter Reaganism, wherein what few fetters on Corporate CEO power are broken entirely, and what few half-assed safeguards on social order are torn to shreds in the name of "conservatism". When actually it is nothing more than *cheapness*, because folks figured out that Mass Media manipulation, on the largest scale, is actually *cheaper* for the CEOs, that own the politicians on both sides, (as crowd control) than keeping people working at minimum wage and *giving* poor folks half a chance to live without being swept into the gutter like roadkill...which held up. Until Resident Dumbass and his little Bin Laden Inc. Clique (Dick Cheney, former business partner with Bin Laden Construction of Saudi Arabia, founded and ran by *Osama's daddy*) decided to *murder* the New Economy by *calling in* a terrorist attack on our soil and *letting it happen* when the hijacked aircraft could and should have been shot down...or never allowed to take off from the field.
