My EFC is 9867.I lost my job in April and have no means of income. Is this taken into consideration by F.A?

I just renewed my fafsa today. I had a descent job and made 31k last year. I lost this job in April of this year and make nowhere near that at the moment. Does the financial aid office take that into consideration( I have no job) when determining award money? My EFC is 9867. Its sad that the DOE determines EFC stricty on income and not house mortgage and car notes and cost of living which is outrageous in post-katrina Louisiana. The federal government preaches to go back to school but how can I afford it with an EFC of 9867? I know there are people out there far off worse than I am but I wanted to attend a school that charges about 20 grand annually. Doesnt look like thats gonna happen now.

  1. First and foremost, consider all options when going to school. 20K a year is well... Second, go to the fin aid office and ask to apply for Unusual Circumstances. Tell them you lost your job and your income is not as it was last year. Often they will require documentation of this such as a layoff letter from your previous employer. They may ask you to fill out more paperwork, anything they ask for, give to them asap. Maybe this will help!! Good Luck.
  2. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but no, they will not take your recent job loss into consideration. I lost my job back in april at a major retailer ( I was the store manager and district trainer) and therfore, made a decent salary. I applied for school in July and they still based my financial award on my tax return from last year. When I told the fin aid office that I no longer had a job, they simply told me I was stuck with that EFC and fin aid award until my next tax return comes back and proves otherwise. So now I hae to pay for $600 worth of textbooks : ( You can try and see if your school will offer you more scholarships or a work study. Good Luck!!!! : D
